DR. J.H. BENSON EXPIRES AT 81
Had Practiced in Cortland Some Thirty Years
NATIVE OF BROOME COUNTY
Began the Practice of Medicine at Schenevus

Dr. James Herbert Benson, 81, one of Cortland's oldest practicing physicians, died yesterday afternoon at about 5 o'clock at his home, 6 Maple Avenue, following an illness of some two months. He had been in poor health for the past year, and his condition forced him to give up his practice last December.

Dr. Benson was a native of Windsor, Broome county, where he was born May 16, 1849, a son of the late Francis and Myra Lovejoy Benson. After completing his early education in the public schools of Windsor, he took up the study of medicine and entered the Ecelectic Medical College of New York city, from which he was graduated in 1880. Eight years later he completed work at the post graduate medical school in New York. He also attended the School of Psychology at Chicago.

Upon completing his schooling, he began practice at Schenevus, and later spent three years at Stanford before going to St. Louis, Mo., and Highland, Ill. He came to Cortland in the early part of 1901 and continued his practice in this city for 30 years. He owned the first X-ray machine in the city, and he was among the first to own and drive an automobile in Cortland.

In 1868 he was married to Delia Ann Heath at Windsor. He was a member of the Cortland County Medical Society and the Homer Avenue Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Edward J. Dickson of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. John T. Betts of Cortland; one son, Orton H. Benson of Branford, Conn.; and three grandchildren, Clarence Benson of New Haven, Woodruff Benson of Branford, and Tyler D. Betts of this city.

Private funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 at the late home, 6 Maple Avenue. Rev. George Perkins, pastor of the Homer Avenue Methodist Church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Dr. Carl W. Scovel, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Friends may call at the home Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5. Burial will be made in the Cortland Rural cemetery.
