James Harrison Bowen was born and raised in Hyattsville, Maryland in the house built by his grandfather, Harrison S. Bowen. He was a retired Patent Attorney, as well as a designer and inventor. He was next to the oldest of several siblings --Lottie Bowen (Mathias), Percy Prettyman Bowen, Allan Bowen, and Rosalee Bowen. In 1927 he resided in Seattle where he had his own company designing and manufacturing airplane propellers. He married Rita and sired two sons -- Harry and Donald. During WWII he worked with Eastman Kodak in the design and development of camera, lense, and viewing equipment for military aircraft. In 1935 he married Helen Parker of Georgia, and they had two sons -- Guy Parker Bowen and James Harrison Bowen (no Jr. added). Just before the war ended they adopted a daughter -- Joyce Helen Bowen. After the war he returned to the extended family farm in Waterfall Virginia, and the DC area where he practiced patent law until he retired in 1959.
