History - Willard Young's mother died when he was six years of age and he and his three sisters, Mary, Maria and Phoebe, were placed in charge of Sister Zina D. H. Young, who proved a real mother to them.
Willard was baptized April 30, 1860, by James Works, and was ordained an Elder and received his endowments in the Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Dec. 28, 1868. He was ordained a Seventy in October, 1891, by Moses Thatcher, and in the fall of the same year he labored for several months as a Mutual Improvement missionary in Davis, Weber and Box Elder counties. From 1891 to 1893 he was president of the Young University and from 1906 to 1915 president of the L. D. S. University. He was appointed a member of the General Church Board of Education Oct. 18, 1888, and a member of the Church Board of Examiners in 1906, serving in the latter capacity until June 30, 1915. He was ordained a High Priest by John T. Caine March 26, 1907, and set apart as an alternate member of the High Council of the Ensign Stake; later he became a regular member of that organization. He was appointed and set apart as assistant to the president of the Logan Temple Jan. 3, 1916, and labored in that capacity until July, 1917. In 1919 he was appointed superintendent of Church building activities.
