Death of John Maus, Esq.

Another old and respectable citizen of Belleville, Mr. John Maus, one of the proprietors of the National Hotel, who died on Wednesday night April 7th about 10 o'clock, aged 54 years.

He had been suffering for a number of years with asthma, which, we learned was the cause of his death. The deceased had resided in Belleville since the year 1845, and was universally esteemed.

The funeral took place on Saturday, at 2 o'clock p.m., at Walnut Hill Cemetery, and was largely attended by relatives and sympathizing friends.

NOTES:
~ John Maus was one of the early German Pioneers to Belleville.
~ Brother of Katharina Elisabeth Andel 1813-1885, nee Maus, wife of John Andel.
~ Mr. and Mrs. John Maus were proprietors of the National Hotel, on the downtown Belleville square. By 1868, proprietorship was turned over to his son, Phillip (per the Belleville newspaper of that year).
~ John Maus' daughter, Anna, would later marry William Bang who becomes proprietor of the National Hotel.

THE NATIONAL HOTEL
Southwest corner Public Square, owned and kept by John Maus since 1848, and now widely and favorably known as a really good hotel. About three years ago Mr. Phillip B. Maus, Son of the above-named gentleman, formed a co-partnership with his father, and since that time the hotel has been under his immediate supervision. It is centrally located, rooms all light and airy, table well spread with the choicest viands, and guests are treated with every possible kindness. We commend this hotel to the traveling public. Attached to the Hotel is commodious stabling and buggy yards. (written 1866)
