HERMAN BOETTCHER

Herman Boettcher, 87, lifelong resident of the village of Reedsville, who in 42 years as chief of the volunteer fire department, missed only four fire calls, died early Wednesday at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday at the Reedsville Funeral Home and at 2 pm at the St. John St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reedsville. The Rev. Elwood Haberman will officiate and burial will be in the West Side Church cemetery.

He was born in Reedsville in 1866. When a young man he was a member of the Reedsville City Band and for 28 years operated a blacksmith shop in the village.

In his long span as fire chief, he saw fire fighting expand from the hand drawn and horse drawn equipment to motorized trucks. When he retired in 1936, he was succeeded by Reuben Rusch. Boettcher also served 14 years as village marshall.

In that 14 year span he never had a day off. Although the village board offered him a week's vacation each year, Boettcher always declined.

He married Evangeline Hintz in Reedsville. She died in 1914. Survivors are a son, Arthur of Reedsville; four daughters, Mrs. laura Donahue, Mrs. Gust Mumpy and Mrs.
Arthur Habeck of Manitowoc and Mrs. James Cullen of Hayton, Wis.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after Friday noon.
