John was the son of Jacob & Susan Wallace. According to Find A Grave contribuor Kasey Aubel, John's middle name was Franklin.

He married Mary Jane Sprenkle.

They had eleven children: Rebecca Malinda (Reisinger); Jacob Porter; William; U.S. Grant; Alice M.; Amanda; Emma (Newcomer); John C.; Minnie (Holtzapple); Horace Myhleigh; & Maggie (Gable).

John's obituary in the York Dispatch includes: "He is survived by a widow, four sons and four daughters. The sons are J. P. Wallace, the teacher of East Prospect borough school; W. W. Wallace, teacher of the primary school at Craleyville; H. M. Wallace, teacher of Benson's school in Lower Windsor township, and John C. Wallace, a cigar manufacturer at Long Level. The daughters are Mrs. Solomon Reisinger, of Craley; Mrs. Solomon Newcomer, of Long Level; Mrs. C. C. Cable of Windsorville, and Mrs. William Holtzapple, of Yoe borough. One sister, Mrs. Susan Leiphart, of Lancaster city, also survives."
