James M. Cobb, son of Lieut. William Cobb and Sarah Stancil, was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, the second of five known children. His father served in the Revolutionary War and James was in his late teens and may have joined up. After the war there was a great movement of pioneers seeking virgin land as it opened up for settlement. He and his siblings joined the movement and scattered in different directions. He was twenty-four years old and in Columbus County, Georgia, when his first child, a son, was born. He and his spouse (name unknown) were the parents of eight known children.
