John Cobb, Sr., son of Lieut. William Cobb and Sarah Stancil, was born in 1765 in Dobbs County, North Carolina, the youngest of four known sons. While he was about twelve years old, the British citizens in the American colonies rebelled against the mother country, England, and stated so in the Declaration of Independence. John's father was an officer in the fledging American forces and served in the Revolutionary War. John married Nancy Coburn and was living in Anson County, North Carolina when their first nine children were born. His brother, David, was an early settler in Madison County and in about 1817, John's family joined his brother there where the last three of his children were born. His oldest son, Azariah B. Cobb, married his first cousin, Jerusha Cobb, daughter of his Uncle David Cobb. It was not unusual at that time for first cousins to marry.
