Kate Vanek was born in Bohemia in the month of October, 1863, and when but a year old, came, with her parents, to America. They settled in Strawberry Point, Iowa and there Kate Vanek grew to womanhood, and was married, in 1880, to Joseph Barta. Mr. and Mrs. Barta made their home in Iowa until 1901, when they moved to Fullerton, where they have since resided, and where Mr. Barta died in 1918.
To Mr. and Mrs. Barta were born nine children, two of whom preceded their mother in death, one in infancy and one in young manhood. Those surviving are: Thomas, of Ellendale; Anna, now Mrs. Frank Van Middlesworth; Kathryn, now Mrs. William Newman; Evelyn, now Mrs. Martin Almquist; Mary, now Mrs. Frank Sturma of Buchanan, ND; and Albert and Bernice, of Fullerton.
Mrs. Barta’s going leaves a place in the community which can not soon be filled, for her life had been given unselfishly to the service of others, not only in the circle of her immediate family, but to all who were in need of help or encouragement.
Besides her children, Mrs. Barta is survived by three brothers: Frank Vanek of Billings, MT; and Joseph and Thomas Vanek of Lamont, IA; three sisters: Mrs. Frank (Rosa) Zemanek of Lamont, IA; Mrs. Walter (Mary) Van Vors of Dubuque, IA; and Mrs. William (Barbara) Knettle of Chicago.
Funeral services were conducted from the family home Monday morning at eleven o’clock, and the remains were laid to rest in the Fullerton cemetery.
