Joseph Barta Fatally Injured Last Saturday

Joseph Barta, one of the prominent figures in Dickey County affairs, was fatally injured about seven o’clock last Saturday morning, at his farm home near Fullerton. While caring for the stock, he was kicked in the upper abdomen by a stallion. He was able to walk to the house, but though the best of medical aid available was summoned, he died about three o’clock in the afternoon. He did not lose consciousness, and though he suffered terrible pain, preserved the same calm, indomitable courage that has characterized his entire life. Death was due to internal hemorrhage.

Joseph Peter Barta, son of Joseph and Kathryn Barta, was born on a farm near Lamont, IA, May 1st, 1883, and died at the family home near Fullerton, ND, Saturday afternoon, July 17th, 1920. He was thirty-seven years of age.

Joe came from Iowa with the rest of the Barta family in 1901, and for the past 19 years has lived in Dickey County, about three miles north of Fullerton. During the past few years he has been much before the public as a popular and successful auctioneer. The fact that he has made many friends was proved by the great number of people who came to pay their last respects to this genial, kind-hearted man. His funeral was the largest ever held in the county, about two hundred cars following the body to its final resting place.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Joseph (Kate) Barta, and by two brothers, Thomas of Ellendale and Albert of Fullerton, and by five sisters: Mrs. Anna Van Middlesworth, Mrs. Kathryn Newman, and Mrs. Evelyn Almquist, and Bernice, all of Fullerton; and Mrs. Mary Sturma of Buchanan, ND.

The funeral was in charge of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and Rev. J.R. Spiller of the Baptist Church of this city conducted a simple, beautiful service under the trees in the yard at the Barta home. Interment was made in the Fullerton cemetery.
