John T. Blankinship, 89, formerly of Murphysboro, the retired owner of J.T. Blankinship & Associates, Consulting Engineers, died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Westmont, after a brief illness. He had resided there for the past three years with his wife, Ruth, to whom he had been married for more than 65 years. Prior to that, John and Ruth retired to Sun City Center, Fla., for approximately 20 years.

He was educated at St. Andrew’s School, Murphysboro Township High School, Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois.

After completing his studies, he was employed as a resident engineer by the Illinois Highway Department and then with the Army Corps of Engineers in St. Louis, Mo.

In 1942, he was appointed as Lieutenant j.g. in the United States Navy and served aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Haraden in the Pacific as the CIC and Executive Officer until it was attacked in 1944. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Blankinship formed J.T. Blankinship and Associates, Consulting Engineers, of Murphysboro, and operated that firm for 35 years. The firm continues today and is a significant economic part of the business and engineering community in southern Illinois. Mr. Blankinship was also instrumental in SIU gaining an engineering program.

Mr. Blankinship was a member of St. Andrew’s Church and was actively involved in the building of St. Joseph’s Memorial Hospital and St. Andrew’s School. He was also involved in numerous veterans, business and civic organizations, including the VFW, American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the Illinois and National Society of Engineers, the Illinois Society of Consulting Engineers-President of the Egyptian Chapter in 1967, the Lions Club, the Elks Club and was named “Boss of the Year” in the business of the community in southern Illinois. In Florida, he belonged to Prince of Peace Catholic Church, the Sawdust Engineers and the Security Patrol.

Mr. Blankinship leaves his wife, Ruth; three children, Jack (Sherri) Blankinship, of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Elizabeth-Jill (Jack) Heller, of Belleville, and Cynthia Katsafanas of Willowbrook; …

He was preceded in death by his mother, Tillie (Bastien) Blankinship, father, Grover F. Blankinship of Murphysboro, sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Williams of Murphysboro; …

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, with Father Gary Gummersheimer officiating.

The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital or St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.
