After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Harold returned to Hospers where he was employed at Pilley’s Cheese Plant.

He was employed for a time at Zwagerman's Hardware Store in Hospers before moving to Missouri where he and Rosella lived for two years. Harold and Rosella returned to Hospers in 1958, where Harold was self-employed, operating Roos Plumbing and Heating. Harold worked on his own for fourteen years. Harold had been active in the Hospers community, serving as a Cub Scout leader and served ten years with the Hospers Volunteer Fire Department. Having been proud to serve his country, Harold was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Sibley VFW Post and the Hospers American Legion with which he participated in the honor guard at Memorial Day services and funeral military honors. In 1972, Harold and Rosella settled in Sibley, Iowa, where Harold worked as a plumber for Carlson's Plumbing and Heating, which later was purchased by Stofferans Plumbing and Heating. Harold retired in 1982, because of health reasons. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Sibley. He and Rosella enjoyed the last thirteen summers by spending time at their trailer at Lake Okoboji. He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan and loved having family around. Harold had been a patient at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls for the past four months. This last Sunday morning he died peacefully in his room at the age of seventy-three.
