Hiram Alonzo Embree, 72 years, 10 months, 4 days, a widow, born February 12, 1841 in New York to Samuel Force Embree and Rebecca W. Frazee, both born in New York. He died December 16, 1913 in Grant, Douglas Township, Montgomery County, Iowa of chronic nephritis, mitral regurgistation of heart, burial December 18, 1913 in the Milford, Grant Cemetery, Ed Montgomery, M.D., I. I. Richard, undertaker.

DEATH OF H. A. EMBREE
Tuesday morning occurred the sudden death of H. A. Embree at the home of his son, Grant, near Grant, Iowa. He had been ill for some time, but his death was unexpected The deceased was a well known citizen of Grant and at one time was a member of the Board of Supervisors and a prominent man in business circles.
Hiram Alonzo Embree was born at Starkey, Yates County, New York, February 12, 1841, and died near Grant, December 16, 1913, being seventy-two years, ten months, and four days of age at the time of his death. He enlisted on april 25, 1861, with Co. K. Third New York volunteers, of the Union Army of the civil War and was discharged May 21, 1863. On June 21, 1863, he was married to Mary E. Hillyer and to this union six children were born, one of whom died in infancy. He reenlisted January 6, 1865, with Co. C. Fifth New York Artillery and was discharged June 6, 1865 by reason of the loss of a limb and a gun shot wound.
He followed the occupation of a shoemaker at Rock Stream, New York, until the spring of 1869, when he moved to Iowa, locating on a farm about two and one half miles east of Grant. he lived in that vicinity until his death.
He is survived by four sons, Bert, Grant, and William of Grant, and Samuel of Elliott, and one daughter, Mrs. Riley Curry of near Grant. A large number of grandchildren and distant other relatives survive also. The funeral will be held this morning at 10:30 at the M. E. Church in Grant, conducted by Rev. F. A> Smith. Interment will be made in the Grant Cemetery.

H. A. Embree, one of Douglas township's most prominent and influential farmers died at the home of his son, Grant, on Tuesday morning, December 16. He had not been in the best of health during the past few years and been failing rapidly the last several months.
The death of Mr. Embree removes from its midst one of this community's most respected and esteemed citizens. He held the confidence and trust of those who knew him, having served two years as a member of the county board of supervisors and many years as township trustee. He was a man of sound common sense and business sagacity.
Hiram Alonzo Embree was born at Starkey, Yates county, New York, February 12, 1841. On April 25, 1861, at the age of twenty years, he enlisted in Co. K., Third, N. Y. Volunteers, and received his honorable discharge on May 1, 1863.
He was married on June 21, 1863, to Miss Mary E. Hillyer and to this union were born six children, one of whom died in infancy. The children are Grant S., Albert H., William, and Mrs. Riley Curry, all residing in Douglas township, and Samuel, residing near Elliott.
Mr. Embree re-enlisted on January 2, 1864, in Co. C., 5th N. Y. Artillery, and was discharged June 6, 1865, by reason of the loss of a leg, caused by a gunshot wound.
After his discharge from the army he engaged in the vocation of shoemaker and continued at this trade until he came to Iowa in the spring of 1869. He located on a farm two and a half miles east of Grant and was one of the earliest settlers in this section of the country. Mr. Embree was an industrious man and amassed a considerable fortune during his life time, being able to give each of his children a farm.
Funeral services were held Thursday at eleven o'clock at the M. E. church, Rev. C. F. Smith conducting the services. Interment was made in the Grant cemetery.
