Rome - Within a few hours after the announcement of his resignation as principal of two Rome schools, Danforth R. Thomas, 65, died early this morning at his home, 101 E. Sycamore St., after a month's illness.
Principal of the Barringer School since 1926 and also of the Harvey E. Alter School for the past eight years, Mr. Thomas's ill health had prompted him to resign. The resignation was to be acted upon by the Board of Education at its
meeting Friday night.
Mr. Thomas was born in the town of Floyd June 8, 1880, the son of the late Thomas W. and Mary Ellen Griffith Thomas.
He married the former Miss Estelle Gerard in Holland Patent, Dec. 31, 1907.
Following graduation from the Holland Patent High School, Mr. Thomas continued his education at Colgate University from which he received his bachelor's degree in 1906. In 1932 he won his master's degree in education at
Cornell University.
After five years as principal of a junior high school in Kalamazoo, Mich., he returned to New York State to undertake, farming at Holland Patent where for 10 years he raised purebred Holstein cows.
He served as Oneida County supervisor for the Town of Floyd during two of these years.
Moving to Oriskany, he served as principal of the high school in that town. After two years he came to Rome to become principal of the Barringer School.
Besides serving on the New York State Teachers Association executive board, Mr. Thomas has been its vice-president and president of the Central Zone. A member of the Mohawk Valley Teachers Association, he was president of the Rome Teachers Association for two years.
He attended the Baptist Church and belonged to the Rome Rotary Club and the Utica Torch Club. In college he was affiliated with the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
Surviving besides his wife is one son, Pfc. Gerard Thomas, who is home on furlough; three brothers, David S. Thomas and J. Gordon Thomas, both of Holland Patent, and Wyllys H. Thomas, Westernville; several nieces and nephews. Rome Daily Sentinel, Thursday Evening, September 6, 1945
