His obituary in the 30 May 1912 Valley Times-Star, Newville, PA reads:
"Saturday morning, May 25, this community was shocked to hear of the death of one of its oldest and most highly respected citizens in the person of Dr. D. S. McCoy, dentist, which took place at his home on Big Spring avenue. While in declining health for some time past, he did not relinquish his profession until a few weeks before his death.
"He was a resident of Newville for more than forty years, coming to this place from Newburg, where he was born and reared. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran church, served several terms as a member of the Newville school board and borough council. When the Newville Cemetery Association was organized several years ago and incorporated, he was one of the charter members and a member of its board of directors for a great many years. He was a Democrat, and took keen interest in all the workings of his party both in Newville and in the entire county.
"Surviving him are his wife, two daughters and four sons, Mrs. Daniel Givler of Carlisle; Mrs. Cloyd Skinner, of McKeesport; Charles, of Philadelphia; Edgar , of Baltimore; David, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Frank at home. Also one sister, Mrs. Mary Shulenberger, Newville.
"The funeral was held from his late residence Tuesday afternoon, and interment made in the Newville cemetery."
