Clement served during the War of 1812. He was living in Washington, D.C. when the war began. After the war he married Sarah Myers about 1817. About 1817 he took up land in Lackawannock Township in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He did acquire bounty land in Iowa after the war. This acreage he gave to his son-in-law Oliver Burdette that married Abigail.

Marriage began for Clement and Sarah in a one room log cabin the two of them built in the woods of Mercer County. Eventually they were able to build a larger house but it took many years for all the final touches to be finished. Game was plentiful and they had gardens.
