Allen was born in McKeesport, PA to Nettie Ruby (Gowen) and Robert Christian Lyle.

He was employed at Canoe Creek State Park in Frankstown Township. In addition, he assisted his father with his painting and wallpapering business in Tyrone.

On September 6, 1916, Allen and Clara S. Gardner were united in marriage in Bellwood.

On July 12, 1917, they welcomed a baby boy, Walter Boyd Lyle. On October 16, 1918, Allen lost his wife, Clara, to Peritonitus. Six months later, he lost his son, 15 months old, to illness.

On May 28, 1919, Allen and Elizabeth Hillard were married in Bellwood.

By July 1919, Allen was serving on Troop C, Squadron Calvary, of the Pennsylvania Reserve Militia.

Allen passed away on January 26, 1922, at the age of 28, due to complications resulting from Diphtheria.
