Robert Christian Lyle was born on November 30, 1862 in Centre Township, to Robert V. Lyle and Elizabeth Anna Houser.

He was the oldest of eight children. His siblings included six sisters; Mary Jane, Linnie, Sallie, Gertrude, Ivy, and Elsie. He had one brother, Ulysses.

In 1888, Robert married Katherine "Kate" Alice Keller in Centre Hall and in 1889, a daughter, Ruth, was born to them. The marriage lasted approximately one year, when Robert, according to The Centre Reporter, "skipped out and disappeared".

Robert Lyle was contacted by authorities about five years later in the Bellwood area, where he had fallen in love with Nettie Ruby Gowen. By the time he was contacted, he and Nettie were the parents of five children. Robert was charged and fined for bigamy & adultery. After the charges were settled, Robert and Nettie were married. His first wife, Kate, also remarried.

Robert and Nettie went on to have a total of thirteen children together. They made their home in Tyrone, where Robert owned and operated Lyle's Painting and Wallpapering.

In order of birth, their children were:

Robert Leo Lyle
Allen Boyd Lyle
Raymond Marion Lyle
Iva E. Lyle
Marguerite Elizabeth Lyle (Campbell, Wolfe)
Beatrice Lydia Lyle (Campbell)
Grace Nettie Lyle (Harshberger)
Gladys Lyle (Fender)
Catherine Eva Lyle (Vaughn, Flutz, Wales, Youngstead)
Dorothy Lyle (Mock)
William D. Lyle (died as baby)
Roxie M. Lyle (Gerald, Jarrell)
George Martin Lyle

Robert and Nettie were members of the Bellwood Methodist Church and were active in community events.

After Nettie's death in 1918 at the age of 44, Robert raised his younger children on his own, with help from nearby family members and continued to run his business until retirement.
