Nettie Ruby was the daughter of Otis M. Gowen, of Clinton, Maine and Margaret A. Sitman of Antis Township, PA. She had an older sister, Lydia.

In 1902, Nettie married Robert Christian Lyle. They had 13 children and after initially living in Antis Township, they settled in Tyrone.

Nettie died in 1918 at the age of 44. Her husband never remarried. Nettie and Robert are buried in Bellwood.
