Dr. James Reed, Quincy dentist, dies.
Well-known Quincy dentist Dr. James R. Reed, 72, of 6 Curved Creek Road, died at 1:55 a.m. Tuesday (March 21, 1995) in his home.
Born May 22, 1922, in Quincy, Dr. Reed was a son of Robert and Edith Amen Reed. He married Phyllis Hagenbaumer Aug. 11, 1951, in St. Peter Catholic Church. She survives.
A graduate of Quincy High School and Quincy College, Dr. Reed earned his doctor of dentistry degree from Marquette University. He was a World War II veteran.
Dr. Reed started his practice in 1945 in Quincy with Dr. James Hafner and established his individual practice at 527 S. Eighth in 1981. He retired in July 1991.
He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Quincy Exchange Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 37, Spring Lake Country Club, Gilmer Society of the Illinois Dentists Association and Central States Archaeological Society, and had served as a board member and was a current member of the Quincy Museum.
Mr. Reed was an avid Indian artifacts collector. Since the age of 10, he had scoured farm fields and construction sites in the U.S. and Ireland. He had a keen interest in the Erroke Indian Museum, which was located at Indian Mounds Park and is now in the Quincy Museum. He also was interested in Civil War memororabilia and had collected numerous Union and Confederate army items.
Survivors also include two sons, Casey M. of Quincy, and E. Kevin of Olathe, Kan.; four daughters, Robin R. Baker and Mrs. Jerry (Erin) Klitz, both of Quincy, Mrs. Kevin (Jayme) Halpin of Ballwin, Mo., and Mrs. Dan (Kelly) Wells of Lake St. Louis; two brothers, Dr. Thomas Reed and Daniel Reed, both of Quincy; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Jeanne) Henderson of Lake Wood, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Stevee, Jesse and Sarah Baker and Joshua, Breanne and Emily Klitz, all of Quincy, Jacey and Maitand Wells, both of Lake St. Louis, Connor and Cullen Halpin, both of Ballwin, and Kelsey and Callie Reed, both of Olathe.
Services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church by the Rev. Roy Bauer. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. Thursday and until time of services Friday in the funeral home.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Quincy Exchange Club at 6 p.m. Thursday.
