Daniel Lee Reed, 79, of 2019 South 24th Street, passed away at 1:50 p.m. Thursday (June 11, 2015) at Blessing Hospital.
Daniel was born on April 17, 1936 in Quincy to Robert Charles and Edith Amen Reed. He married P. E. Metzger on July 16, 1960 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy. She survives.
Daniel was a 1954 graduate of Quincy High School and then went on to graduate from Quincy College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He went on to become a Medical Technologist (ASCP), CMT, receiving his training at St. Mary's Hospital.
He served six years in the Army National Guard and then six more years as an Officer in the Naval Reserves.
He worked for Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceutical Company as a Regional Sales Manager, visiting doctors in the Tri-State area for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He was at home behind the wheel and loved to travel, logging over 1 million miles on the road. There wasn't an antique shop or dealer within 300 miles that he had not popped into on his journeys.
Daniel was a huge lover of all things historical and was especially fond of and extremely knowledgeable in military history. He loved Genealogy, proudly boring family and friends alike with the tales of his ancestors. One of his proudest and most recent accomplishments was having a military marker put up in Woodland Cemetery to honor one his ancestors, an early Quincy resident who ran for Mayor of Quincy against John Wood in 1846, losing by a mere 27 votes and not long after became the only person from Quincy to lose their life in the Mexican War.
He was one of the founding members of the Tri-State Civil War Round Table, was a member of and had served on numerous local boards including the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County and the Quincy Museum. The man was a voracious reader, amassing somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 books, mostly biographies and historical tomes. We are pretty sure he collected about everything at one time or another, including a few antique fire engines .one of which he had sold to one of the members of the Coors Brewing Family back in the 1980's.
In addition to all of the above, he also enjoyed working on their house and yard. While his wife Patricia (Pat) was busy planting flowers, he was busy trimming bushes, planting trees and other assorted plants in his earlier years as well as fighting his old familiar nemesis, the ever aging and chipping paint on the old house on 18th and Jersey. That was a yearly battle for 20 plus years. He loved the holidays, taking special pride in his Christmas tree decorating prowess and his "A Christmas Story" Leg Lamp, which he proudly displayed in the front window every holiday season. He loved telling jokes to anyone who would listen and pulling pranks on the unsuspecting. Most of all, he was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by many.
In addition to his wife, Daniel is survived by five children, 10 Grandchildren; a brother, Dr. T. Reed of Quincy; Sister-in-Law and many nieces and nephews.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dr. James (Jim) Reed and a sister, Jeanne (Reed) Henderson.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Paul Fraser. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
There is no visitation prior to the funeral service. The family will meet with friends following the services at First Christian Church, 14th & Maine Street.
