John Elder lived in Booth's Creek, West Virginia. He was the father of Margaret Elder who married Fielding Riley.John was born on 13 April 1760 in Ireland and was the son of William Elder.

John and his brother, Joseph, crossed the Atlantic to Massachuetts in 1790.

John was listed as; Elder b. 13 April 1760, in the Passenger Immigration List Index, First edition by Filby and Mary K. Meyer in the Heads of families 1790 in Massachuetts. According to family sources, during the voyage he met Margaret.

John Elder was about thirty and Margaret McHenry was about twenty-five when they married soon after landing in America, perhaps in New York about 1790.

They were members of the Middleville Baptist Church.

The 1810 census verified they were living in Harrison County, Virginia. Household members: John Elder (45 & up), Margaret (45 & up), Joseph (10-15), William (under 10), Mary & Margaret (10-15) and Elizabeth & Sarah (under 10).

John was fifty-seven and Agnes was thirty-seven when they married.

The 1820 census revealed John was a farmer. Household members: John Elder (45 & up), Agnes (16-25), Joeph (16-25), William & one male (10-15), Samuel & John (under 10), one female (under 10).

John was about sixty-one when his last child was born in 1821.

The 1840 census revealed one household member was engaged in farming. Household members: John Elder Sr. (80-89), Agnes (50-59), Katharine (15-19) and three slaves.

The 1850 census revealed their real estate value was $3000 and they were living in District 63, Taylor County, Virginia. John could not read or write. Household members: John Elder (91), Agnus (70), Joseph (21) and colored boy, Martin (14).

They had been married thirty-nine years when John died in 1857.

John's last will and testament was recorded in February 27, 1850 in the Taylor County Court House. Following is part of that will. Note: Lavina Mcelfresh and Sarah Vincent were his daughter Mary Polly's children as she was deceased by that time.

{{I John Elder citizen of Booths Creek, Taylor County, Virginia being aged and infirm in ninetieth year but of sound mind having a desire to settle my worldly affairs while able to do so. Do desire ...and in the following manner: Joseph Elder, William Elder, John Elder Jr, Margaret Riley, Elizabeth Fowler, Sarah Willis and Katharine Riffee share alike;

Elizabeth Elder, Loid Elder, Nathaniel Elder, Mary A. Elder, and Martha V. Elder heirs of Samuel Elder deceased to have the said Samuel's share. Lavina Mcelfresh and Sarah Vincent each a half share.

That at the death of myself and wife, the colored boy bound to me by the name of Martin be the property of John Elder Jr. until he arrives at the age of 21 years at which time he is free by birth.

That Agnes Elder, my wife, to have one third of all my personal property.}}
