Death Claims Lodi Farmer, Philanthropist
Charles L. Beckman, prominent Lodi farmer, financier, and philanthropist, and son of a pioneer Lodi family died suddenly Monday night in his home at 850 E. Kettleman Lane. He was 69 years of age, and had been in ill health for several years. Mr. Beckman had accumulated large holding of land, commercial buildings and apartments in the San Joaquin area, and had been the source of financial aid to many residents in and around Lodi. He owned interests in several wineries, and, at the time of his death was co-owner, with David J. Weigam, of the old Vine Fruit Co. on South Stockton St.
Born in Lodi April 25, 1891, he was the son of William Beckman of Germany and Sophia Blass Beckman of Columbia, California. In 1926, he built his home on Kettleman Lane, and it has become a familiar landmark of Lodi.
Mr. Beckman is survived by his wife, Alpha Beckman; two sons, Charles M. Beckman and William T. Beckman; and two grandchildren, William Troy and Marcia Ann Beckman, all of Lodi; a sister, Mrs. Emma I. Tucker of Stockton; one brother, Eugene Beckman, also of Stockton; and an aunt, Mrs. Flora Langhorst of Lodi.
His brothers and sisters who preceded him in death were Albert Beckman of Stockton, Mrs. Edith Hawver of Ione and Mrs. Lulu Thompson of Lodi.
Mr. Beckman was a charter member of the Eagles Aerie Number 848, and a former pupil at the Alpine School.
