Joseph Kogut, 98, formerly of 740 Black Hut Road, Glendale, died yesterday in the Oakland Grove Health Care Center, Woonsocket, where he had been a patient for the past three years, He was the husband of the late Caroline (Kukla) Kogut, who died in 1979.
Born October 18, 1896, in Dombrowa, Poland, a son of the late Frank and Julia Bialek Kogut, he came to the United States in 1899 and lived most of his life in Woonsocket. He lived in Glendale for 15 years.
Mr. Kogut was a foreman and supervisor for 30 years for the city highway and public works department, retiring in 1959. He was instrumental in the construction of one of the city's first Little League diamonds at Barry Memorial Field.
He was an Army Veteran of World War I and served 15 years as an alderman in the city's Third Ward. He was a member if Woonsocket Lodge, Polish National Alliance and the Woonsocket Tans Football Club.
He is survived by four sons, Robert R. Kogut of Las Vegas, Frederick Kogut of Groton, Conn., retired Woonsocket Fire Department Captain Bernard T. Kogut of Glendale, with whom he lived, and Woonsocket Firefighter Paul T. Kogut of Woonsocket; a daughter Dorothy Dyl of Woonsocket, a brother Andrew Kogut of Holiday, Florida, three sisters, Helen Coughlin of Danbury, Conn., Sophie Lagoda of Bridgeport Conn., and Stasia Niedzwiadek of Woonsocket, 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held tomorrow at 9 am from the Kubaska Funeral Home, 35 Harris Avenue, Woonsocket, with a Mass at 0 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Harris Avenue, Woonsocket. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, Blackstone.
