David Herman Mann was born June 3rd, 1932 in Klamath Falls, Oregon to Margie Cordelia Clinton and Walter Calvin Mann. He was the middle of three children, including his older sister Joyce Marie Mann and younger brother Robert Clinton Mann. Their father Walter worked in saw mills, and they bounced around throughout northern California until settling down in Humboldt county. At some point, Margie divorced Walter and then married Gottfried "Fred" Roth. Fred treated the three kids like they were his own. Shortly after Margie and Fred got married, the family moved to Orland, California.

He married Jean Kuhnen on December 13th, 1952 in Glenn County, California. They had four children: Lynda Davean Mann, Dena Renai Mann, Peter David Mann, and Joel Scott Mann. He lived in Glenn County his entire life, and founded his own business, Mann Ag Aviation, which was later taken over by his oldest son Peter David Mann.

He passed away on September 17th, 1986 in Willows, California, of lung cancer, even though he never smoked. According to his brother Robert, they believe his death was caused by asbestos from when he worked in the local hospital in maintenance. At the time of his death, he was survived by his sister Joyce, brother Robert, wife Jean, daughters Lynda and Dena, and sons Peter and Joel.
