Earl died on his birthday, March 16, 1954, near Lena, Stephenson County, Illinois. Following is a transcription from the March 17, 1954, issue of the Freeport Journal-Standard about Earl's death:

Is Found Dead
In Car Today
Earl C. Rosenstiel, 59, a farm implement salesman for Sears Roebuck & Co. in Freeport, was found dead in his automobile near Lena this morning.
Rosenstiel's body was found on the floor behind the front seat of the car at 10:45 a.m.
Stephenson County Coroner Gene Burke said he could find no marks of violence on the body, and a post mortem will be held to determine the cause of death. Death due to natural causes was "possible," Burke said.
Reported Missing
Rosenstiel's wife reported to the sheriff's office early this morning that her husband was missing.
He had left the house about 6:30 Tuesday night and said he was going to Eleroy on business. He was believed to have been carrying a large sum of money.
Coroner Burke said Rosenstiel was still carrying a large sum of money when found.
Following Mrs. Rosenstiel's report to the sheriff's office, a police alarm was sent out in the area containing a description of Rosenstiel and his car.
Car Found
The car was spotted on the Town Line road about 40 feet off of Route 73, by Stephenson County jailer Adrian Tucker and Perry Bennett, chief deputy of Boone County, who were on their way to Winslow.
The car had apparently been backed into the Town Line road and ignition turned off, according to Chief Deputy Alvin Stine. All doors of the car were closed.
Coroner Burke sad Rosenstiel had been dead about 10 to 12 hours. Rosenstiel is survived by his wife, the former Marie Deemer of Freeport, and a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Pitt of Baileyville.
He had been employed by the Sears farm store for about 10 years. Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Walker Mortuary.
Reported in the March 18, 1954 of the Freeporet Journal-Standard, it was determined Earl died of a heat attack.
Marie died August 5, 1986, in Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois.
