Cycle-car mishap kills local man
Services for Melvin Joe Burges, 48, who was killed Saturday in a car-motorcycle accident, will be at 2:3 p.m. today in Central Church of Christ with Wilson Wallace, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park by Gililland Watson Funeral Home.
Burges was killed when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car driven by Gary Don Huse, 22, of Hereford, according to Texas Department of Public Safety officials.
The impact threw Burges more than 75 feet when House's car hit the bike at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Progressive Road.
Burges died of head injuries at 6:26 p.m. at Deaf Smith General Hospital.
A native of Hereford, Burges married Rita Meyer, July 7, 1974, at Hereford. He had worked with the Hereford School district and Oswalt Industries. He was a member of Central Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife; five brothers, Clint Lundrey and Lee Roy Burges, both of Hereford, C.E. Lundry of Wichita, Kan., Vernon Burges of Shamrock and C.V. Burges Jr; and two sisters, Arleta Stanford of Bakersfield, Calif., and Dora Lee Baird of Anchorage, Alaska.
