Augustus F. Kuhl, a well known liveryman in Manitowoc, is a native resident of this city, born August 5, 1864. His parents were Michael and Margaret (Riplinger) Kuhl, both of whom were natives of Germany.
Augustus F. Kuhl received his education in the public schools and took up the trade of his father, harness-making which he, however, followed only a short time. In 1883 he went to Chicago where he was employed until 1888, at which date he returned to Manitowoc, and started in the livery business.
In January 1886 the firm of Kuhl & Vollendorf was dissolved and August conducted the Livery Stable and paid all debts contracted by the firm.
In 1890 Mr. Kuhl wedded Miss Mary Rank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Rank, the father a native of Germany, and the mother of Bohemia.
Mr. and Mrs. Kuhl had seven children: Ruben Augustus, Lydia E, Fermata and Irene S, Frank A, Vernon, Donald and Dorothy R. Mr. Kuhl is a democrat and fraternally he is a member of the Order of Moose.

AUGUST KUHL DIES AT HOME IN TWO RIVERS
Operator of Livery Stable In Manitowoc For 38 Years as 70 Years Old
August Kuhl, for years operator of a livery stable in this city, and who in late years made his home with a son, Donald Kuhl, at Two Rivers, died there early today. He was 70 years of age.
After retiring from the livery business in Manitowoc, Mr. Kuhl engaged in street contracting work here for many years. He was seriously ill with complications for the past two months.
Funeral services will be held in this city Tuesday morning from the Frazier mortuary and later from the St. Boniface church with interment here.
The deceased was born in this city in 1865, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kuhl, early settlers of Manitowoc. He engaged in the livery stable business, having a stable on South 10th street near the Franklin street corner.
Stables 38 years
Later he moved to the site of the present Streich oil station at 10th and Franklin streets. He operated the stables for 38 years and then turned to street contracting.
Mr. Kuhl was twice married. His first marriage in 1890 was to Miss Mary Rank who died several years later. Thirty years ago he married Miss Martha Dow, who died 12 years ago.
Mr. Kuhl is survived by four daughters, Mrs. E. P. Shea and Mrs. Harvey Smith, both of Chicago, and Mrs. Ray Davis and Miss Dorothy Kuhl, both of Milwaukee; and two sons, Donald of Two
Rivers and Frank Kuhl of Milwaukee. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ida McComas and Mrs. Frances Mitchell, both of Los Angeles, Calif., and two brothers, Michael of Cottonwood Falls,
Kansas, and Nicholas of Manitowoc. There are 12 grandchildren.
