Gerald “Jerry” Charles Bernard, 86, Vermillion, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2015, peacefully at his home surrounded by members of his family. Born February 4, 1929, to Napoleon and Marie Bernard in Sioux City, IA, Jerry was raised and educated in Jefferson before serving with the United States Marines in the Korean War.
On December 27, 1950, Jerry married Helen Christopher in Mayfield, SD, at St. Columbia Catholic Church. Jerry farmed and then plumbed for over 40 years, operating his own business, Bernard Plumbing, for many years.
Jerry enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with family, friends, and neighbors. He took great pride in converting his garage and workshop into his “man cave” and enjoyed displaying pictures of livestock and farm equipment. Jerry will be especially remembered for his endless joke telling and generous spirit.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 64 years, Helen, and their children, Chris (Donna) Bernard, Jefferson, SD, and their children, Jill (Corey) Kamradt, McCook Lake, SD, and Sara (Jason) Moret, Sioux Falls, SD; Jim (Brenda) Bernard and their daughter Leah, Sioux Falls, SD; Ann (Kelly) Ryan and their children Neal (fiancé Mickey) and Gina, Des Moines, IA; Terry Bernard, Vermillion, SD, and his daughters Carly (Donny) O’Connor, Burbank, SD, and Jaime (Michael) Drees, Sioux Falls, SD; Deb Bernard and her daughter Amy (Joel) Woods, Belleview, NE; Richard Bernard, Yankton, SD, and his son Branden, Sioux Falls, SD; Karen Heege and her daughter Margaret, Sioux Falls, SD; Mary (Bob) Woods, Lincoln, NE, and their children, Melissa Zingler, Lincoln, NE, Megan (Andrew) Brown, Topeka, KS, and Maria Woods, Lincoln, NE; David (Joan) Bernard and their children, Christopher and Cecilia, Bloomington, MN.
Jerry is survived by his eleven great grandchildren: Kenadi and Kolton Kamradt; Isabella Moret; Bella Ryan; Haley O’Connor, Peyton and Joseph Drees; Colin, Anna, and Madeline Woods, and Matthew Zingler.
Jerry is survived by his brothers John (Barb) Bernard, Vermillion, SD; Tim (Bonnie) Bernard, Hot Springs, SD; Tom (Barbara), Chadron, NE; and sister Patricia Olson, Vermillion, SD.
He was preceded in death by his son Philip and his brothers Bob, Bill, and Larry, and sisters Jeanne Marie and Mary Lou.
Services will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Vermillion, SD, on Monday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 19, at St. Agnes Catholic Church beginning at 5:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:30 and a prayer service following at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Calvary Cemetery, Vermillion, SD.
