Mary Louise Olson

Mary Louise Olson, 87, of Sioux City passed away January 17, 2015, at Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.


A funeral service will be held 10 A.M., Thursday, January 22, 2015, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with Father Brent Lingle officiating. A visitation will be held at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel on Wednesday, January 21 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 and a prayer service will be at 7:00. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.


Mary was born April 4, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Napoleon and Marie (Connors) Bernard. She grew up on her parents' farm in Jefferson, SD and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1945. She enrolled in nursing school and was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corp during WWII. Her education was cut short by polio.


She was united in marriage to Melvin H. Olson on May 20, 1947 in Sioux City at Epiphany Cathedral Catholic Church. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Riverside for over 60 years. Mary worked for 18 years at the Wincharger plant, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the IPS Harbor Club, the Missouri River Boat Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.


Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Melvin H., three sons; Dennis and wife Bobbi of Mount Sterling, KY, Daniel and his wife Darlene of McCook Lake, SD and Russell and his wife Kim of Sgt. Bluff, IA; nine grandchildren: Jada (Judd) Goodrich, Michael (Kimberly), Rebecca (Ty) Corneau, Bradley (Edarra), Jennifer(Billy) Maliszewski, Nichole(Brandon)Petersen, Greg, David(Mindy)Schuetz and Jon(Erin) Schuetz and 15 great grandchildren, Wyatt, Abby, Elizabeth, Emily, Faith, Paige, Willow, Hudson, Lawson, Landon, Clayton, Alexander, Najika, Rylie and Emerson. She is also survived by her sister Patricia Olson of Vermillion, SD; 4 brothers: John (Barbara) Bernard and Gerald (Helen) Bernard of Vermillion, SD, Tom (Barbara) Bernard and Tim (Bonnie) Bernard of Angostura, SD.


She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers: Robert, William, and Lawrence Bernard and a sister Jeanne Marie Bernard.


She will be remembered as the lifelong companion to her husband and a wonderful mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests the donation made to Hospice of Siouxland.
