James left Quebec and went to western Canada as a young man where he worked as a fur trapper for the Hudson's Bay Company and then hunted buffalo. He married Margaret on 10 Feb 1882 in Alberta, Canada. He was also a teamster and freighter and he traded with Sitting Bull's Indians following the massacre at the Little Big Horn. After he moved into Montana, he worked in a trading store and on 6 Feb 1893 he was appointed as the first sheriff of the newly created Valley County. Later, he established the first school in Valley County and became a successful cattle rancher and banker.

The first obituary below is from page 5 of the 3 Nov 1921 edition of the Great Falls Tribune:

Wealthy Pioneer Dies at Frazer; Big Funeral Is Held at Hinsdale

Special to the Tribune.
Glasgow, Nov. 2. - James Deegan, pioneer of eastern Montana, died at this home in Frazer early Monday morning. He had been troubled of late years with kidney trouble which caused hardening of the arteries and resultant heart weakening.
Mr. Deegan had been in business at Glasgow, then in the catle business at Hinsdale and of late years had been engaged in the mercantile business at Frazer and Oswego. He was always successful and accumulated a large share of this world's goods. He was a director of the First National bank at Glasgow and owned considerable land and had other investments.
A widow and a large family of children and grand-children survive. The funeral took place at Hinsdale Tuesday afternoon where most of the children reside.

The second obituary below is from page 1 of the 4 Nov 1921 edition of The Glasgow Courier:

Valley Pioneer Called By Death

James Deegan of Frazer, for forty-five years a prominent resident of northeastern Montana, died at his home at midnight Sunday after a short illness, heart failure being the cause of his death. Mr. Deegan was 69 years of age.

Following a requiem mass at Frazer on Tuesday morning the remains were taken on the local passenger train to Hinsdale where a short service was held in the church and interment made in Hinsdale cemetery beside the remains of two children of Mr. Deegan who died years ago. Rev. Fr. Benedict of Wolf Point was in charge of the services. The funeral was largely attended by old time friends of the deceased from Hinsdale, Oswego, Malta and Glasgow. The pall bearers were J.H. Rutter, R.F. Ater, Andrew Sherry, Plas Price and Jerome Hutchins, all of Hinsdale. Many beautiful floral pieces from friends or the honored pioneer mutely attested the esteem in which he was held.

James Deegan was born in Oct. 1852, in the province of Quebec, Canada. He spent several years of his early youth in Ontario and Manitoba and came to Montana in 1876. For a number of years he was in the stock business on Rock creek in the Hinsdale country. About fifteen years ago he became associated with Dan Knapp in the general merchandise business at Oswego and Frazer. A few years ago that partnership was dissolved. Mr. Deegan took over the Frazer business. He was very successful in his affairs and was accounted well to do.

Mr. Deegan was married in 1882 and is survived by Mrs. Deegan and ten children, a brother and three sisters who live in eastern Canada. In order of ages the children are: Mrs. Hugo Hanson of Hinsdale; Mrs. W.W. Jaycox of Hinsdale; Dan Deegan, Mrs. William Hill, John Deegan, Tom Deegan, Mrs. Albert Weasa, Mrs. Lou Hawley, Mrs. William Bryant and Allen Deegan, age 14, all of Frazer.

"Jim Deegan" was one of the best known figures in northeastern Montana. He was one of the earliest stockmen in old Valley county and rode the range with many of the punchers of long ago. When Valley county was carved from old Dawson county in 1894 Jim Deegan was chosen to be its first sheriff and faithfully performed the duties of that office in the days when duty spelled danger continually. Mr. Deegan was director in the First National Bank in this city. He was a member of the original board of the First National Bank and always took a keen interest in the affairs of that institution.

All Valley county mourns the death of this sturdy citizen. For nearly half a century he held a high place within its boundaries, always with his face to the front--never shirking his responsibilities, never asking for odds, ever with honesty and justice as his guide-posts.

"He has fought the good fight; he has finished the course; he has kept the faith."

Note: The obituary above references "three sisters who live in eastern Canada". Except for Johanna, no record of his other two sisters have been found.
