George Henry White was born 6/12/1846 in New York. He served in K Co. of the 12th regiment of the Indiana Volunteers from 8/12/1862-6/8/1865. According to family lore, at the age of 16, he was living on the family farm in southern Indiana while his two brothers, John and Potter, were serving in the Union Army. Every day, late in the evening, he went out in the fields to bring in the cows, and he helped milk them. On August 20, 1862, however, he didn't return. He joined Company K of the 12th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry Volunteers. He saw three years of military service, and was honorably discharged on June 8, 1865, at Washington, DC. On joining, he was so small that he was nearly lost in his uniform, and being so young, he was made a drummer. He finally located both of his brothers atop Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. He served there under Captain George Nelson. He was wounded, but not seriously. When he went home, he waited until late afternoon, and came in driving the cows before him.
He attended Moore's Hill College in Indiana. He worked as a railroad conductor most of his life.
He married Sarah Gertrude (Sallie) Satterwhite on 9/15/1873, in the presence of Julian Satterwhite, William Stephens, Ella Gayolla, Nannie Parker, and several others.
According to notes left by his daughter-in-law, Claribel White: "He was not very tall, slender, and very good looking. His hair was white (it had been very blond-also his mustache). He had twinkling blue eyes and a ready smile. He treated me like a lady-he liked me and I liked him. He used to come every morning and watch me bathe the baby. I always cooked things country style like soup, greens, cornbread, etc. and invited him to stay for lunch. He wouldn't stay, but he would take a little home with him in a little blue granite bucket. He was always immaculate and courteous." (Ellen White 7/24/2017).
