After leaving school William was a coal miner in Haggs, Scotland. After he married Mary Gordon Stirling and they had three children, Mary, Jean, and LIzzie, the immigrated to New Zealand settling near the Pukepoto Scoria/Basalt volcanic cone, on the Ngunguru Road, between Glenbervie and Kiripaka, in the rural area around Whangarei, in Northand, New Zealand.
William was a coal miner in the Kiripaka mines, and his daughter Mary attended the Kiripaka School in 1903. In 1904 Mary attended Huanui School and by 1906 all of her siblings had joined her.
In about 1919 William, Jane and their three children and two sons-in-law moved to Gisborne, New Zealand. In 1921 when William became the Sexton of the Makaraka Cemetery in the Gisborne District, eldest daughter Mary moved to Opotiki where her husbands family were from, and their middle daughter returned to Whangarei with her husband Frank Hill.
William passed away in 1926 at the age of 58.
