Gertrude May was the daughter of Albert "Bert" Rose and Sarah E. Ingle, both of Dubois County Indiana. She was born out of wedlock and was raised by the Ingle family, primarily by Sarah's older sister, Lillian (Lily) Ingle Shipp Sauer. She used the last name of Rose and Ingle intermittently, so Rose-Ingle is legally her maiden name. Gertrude was named for Albert's sister, Gertrude.

Opal Anspach b. 1912 was either a cousin or a foster child and briefly documented with the family on the 1920 census with their aunt and uncle after Gertrude died.

Gertrude died in Evansville in 1918 and was a victim of the flu epidemic. Complications of influenza which led to pneumonia.
