Drayton was a lifelong resident of Gainesville. He was a bookkeeper at the Florida Farm Colony and was an original member of the Gainesville National Guard unit that was called to active duty during the Jacksonville fire shortly after turn of the 1900's. He also served for several years as secretary of the Old Board of Public Works when Gainesville operated under the council form of government. His wife was the former Mary Sue Allen of McIntosh who preceded him in death by 7 years.

Drayton was the first child of Alexander Avera by Alexander's first wife Harriet Elizabeth Hennis. Drayton's mother, Harriet, died in 1888. Being born in 1880, he was at least 19 years older than Alexander's other boys by Estelle Avera.

Drayton's funeral was at 3 P.M. 10 March 1955, at the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville. Rev. Jack Noffsinger officiated.

John Byron Avera (1902-1978).
