From the History of Mower County, 1911

L. M. Eggen, for the past fifteen years town clerk of Nevada, in which capacity he has given general satisfaction, is one of the substantial men of the county. His well kept farm of 160 acres lies partly in Nevada township, this county, and partly in Union township, Mitchell county, Iowa. Here he carries on general farming operations with much success, having been in possession of the place since 1893, when he purchased it from his father. L. M. Eggen was born in Racine county, Wisconsin, January 14, 1871, son of Rev. J. Muller and Henrietta (Rossow) Eggen, and with them came to Mower county in 1882, settling on the farm he now occupies. Being thoroughly convinced of the evils of intemperance, Mr. Eggen votes the Prohibition ticket, and is an ardent worker in the cause of total abstinence. He and his family worship at the Lutheran church. Prominent Nevada Farmer Dead
OBITUARY

Lauritz Muller Eggen, son of Rev.J Muller and Henriette Eggen, was, born at Racine. Wis, Jan 14. 1871. While he was still an infant, his father accepted a call to Luther Valley, Wis, where Mr. Eggen spent the first eleven years of his life. In 1882 he came with his parents to Mower County, his father having accepted a call from Six Mile Grove Lutheran church and affiliated congregations, settling on the very farm in Nevada Township which he later purchased from his father and made his home until his death.

On the first day of June, 1899, he was married to Libbie Larson, then, of Brookings, S. D., and to this union were born three children: John, at present residing at Wichita, Kan : Harriett (Mrs R. B. Mclndoe) of Howell, Mich.; and Walter who for the past years has been farming the home place. In addition to his widow and children and eight grand children, he is survived by one brother, Gustave, of Green Bay, Wis, and four sisters: the J. O. Oas (Lizzie) of Wawatosa, Wis; Mrs A. M. Wilson (Rena) of Minneapolis; Mrs. M E Waldeland (Laura) of Northfield, Minn.; and Mrs E. J. Larson (Millie) of Virginia, Minn.

Except for time spent attending schools at St. Ansgar, Iowa and Decorah, Iowa, and employment for a short time at a bank at Decorah, Ia, and a period of two years more recently while employed as instructor in Agriculture and Manager of the school farm at the Minnesota State School for the Deaf at Faribault, Minn., Mr. Eggen has stayed quite closely to his own county and township and the home farm in which he has always taken a genuine pride.

Mr. Eggen was always a leader in his community and his church, holding positions of trust in both. He was responsible, in a large measure, for the organization and success of the Six Mile Grove Lutheran Cemetery Association. Fully half of his time in Mower County he was either township clerk or township assessor. In 1925 he was elected County Commissioner and at the end of his first term in this office he was forced to retire from public life because of an accident which left him totally deaf and otherwise incapacitated for the remainder of his life. Despite his physical handicap, and aided by two terms of study at lip reading, he was a familiar figure in his church pew on Sundays, and an active worker in the interests of Six Mile Grove Lutheran church until his death.

The deceased passed away at St. Olaf's Hospital at Austin, Friday, Jan. 26, after an illness of about two days. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Six Mile Grove Lutheran church. Interment was made in the family lot in the church yard.

Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were: Mrs. Rena Wilson, Mrs. Geo. Yole, Mrs Eitel, Mrs. C. A. Aubey, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Edlund, Mrs. Myrtle Taylor, S. J. Severson, Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Waldeland, all of Minneapolis; Mrs M. E. Waldeland of Northfield; Mrs. J.O. Oas of Wawatosa, Wis.; Mrs. E. J. Larsen of Virginia, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Eggen of Green Bay, Wis., Mrs. R. W. Bultman of Faribault; Dr. and Mrs. F. A. Engstrom of Wanamingo.

Many came from surrounding places who had known the deceased for years, to pay their respect to a faithful friend and neighbor. The home community which Mr. Eggen loved and helped to build and improve, will never more be quite complete without his genial presence.
