Widow of pastor dies at 83; Rites Monday

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Mrs. Laura Waldeland, 83, died Friday in the Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis, Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p. m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Northfield, Minnesota. Burial was in Northfield.

Born Laura Eggen, November 28, 1877, at Rockburg, Wisconsin, she grew up in Lyle, Minn., when her father, the Rev. J. Muller Eggen, was the pastor of Six Mile Grove and Mona Lutheran
Churches.

She was married in 1900 to the Reverend W. E. Waldeland. He was pastor of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, 25 years.

Surviving are three sons, Dr. Conrad Waldeland, Maysville, Pa.; Olaf, St. Paul; and Paul, Northfield.

Funeral services for Mrs. M.E. Waldeland, 83, who died at Deaconess hospital in Minneapolis May 5, 1961, were held at St. John's Lutheran church in Northfield, Minnesota May 8.

Laura Andrea Waldeland, nee Eggen, was born November 28, 1877 at Rock Prairie, Wisconsin to the Rev. and Mrs. J. Muller Eggen. In 1880 the Rev. Eggen accepted a call to serve three congregations in the vicinity of Lyle, Minnesota and the family moved to the parsonage near Six Mile Grove church.

She entered the St. Olaf Academy in 1894. On July 18, 1900 she was married to the Rev. Martin Enoch Waldeland and went to live in Fertile, Iowa where her husband had acepted his first call. In 1902 they moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa where they lived for 25 years. This call included the congregations at St. Ansgar, Deer Creek and Carpenter. They moved to Northfield, Minnesota in 1927 where she continued to live after the death of her husband in 1933 until she took up residence at the Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1956.

During her many years of active service Mrs. Waldeland generously used her talents in music, writing and organizational work. She served her local congregation and the church at large with her leadershiip in the Women's Missionary Federation, her Charimanship of the Christian Nurture Department, her membership on the committee for the WCAL Women's Hour, and her many written contributions for publication in church periodicals and pamphlets.

Mrs. Waldeland is survived by a sister, Mrs. E.J. Larsen (Emily) of Virginia, Minnesota; a brother Gustav J. Eggen of Tucson, Arizona; three sons, Conrad R. of Claysville, Pennsylvania, Paul G. of Northfield, Minnesota, Olaf E. of South St. Paul, Minnesota, and six grandchildren.
