The mother of Emily Ruth and her older brother John C.O. Redington died in Dec. 1839 after giving birth to Emily Ruth in Aug. 1839. The two sibling's father d. two years later in Sept. 1841. Brother John C.O. Redington subsequently spent most of his youth in Conn. and Mass. in the household of his maternal uncle and his wife, Rev. Asahel Cornwall Washburn and Rhoda Emma Grant (3rd cousin once removed of Gen. Ulysses Simpson Grant, 18th Pres. of the U.S.) Emily Ruth was adopted by her maternal aunt Semantha Washburn and her husband, Rev. Septimius Robinson of Morrisville, VT, where she spent the remainder of her youth.

On Aug. 19, 1863 at the Morrisville Congregational Church in Morrisville, VT, Emily Ruth Redington m. Rev. Giles Foster Montgomery, who was ordained a Congregational minister that same day. He was the s. of Sereno Montgomery and his first wife Hannah Foster, b. Nov. 9, 1835 in Walden, VT. Shortly after ordination and marriage, Emily and her husband departed for missionary service at Adana, Turkey under auspices of the Boston-based American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions (the A.B.C.F.M.) with both dying in that service in the Middle East. They had five children b. in Turkey, four who would return to the United States:

• i. William Owen Montgomery, b. Feb. 26, 1864 in Adana, Turkey; returned to the U.S. to attend school and d. unmarried Aug. 2, 1885 in Homer, NY. In the U.S. he resided with the family of his cousin, Rev. William Albert Robinson, whose household included William Owen's widowed great aunt, Semantha (Washburn) Robinson.

• ii. Rev. Marshall Foster Montgomery (Protestant Episcopal), b. June 14, 1868 in Maras (now called Kahramanmaras), Turkey and d. Nov. 27, 1956 in Franklin, NH; m. June 14, 1900 at Huron, SD, Pearl Louise Abell. In the 1930 census they were residing in Newark, NJ and had no known children.

• iii. Rev. and Professor George Redington Montgomery, Ph.D., b. June 17, 1870 in Maras (now called Kahramanmaras), Turkey and d. Nov. 29, 1945 in Stamford, Conn.; m. 1) June 23, 1902 in Wakefield, Mass., Emily E. Emerson, and 2) by 1908, Helen Merwin Perkins, b. in Mar. 1880 in New Haven, Conn., dau. of Newton W. Perkins and Abigail Grace Peck. In the 1930 census they were residing in Darien, Conn. where Helen purportedly d. in May 1931. Three children by his two marriages.

• iv. Charles Robinson Montgomery, b. June 15, 1872 in Kernan, Turkey; d. in infancy Jan. 26, 1875 in Maras (now called Kahramanmaras), Turkey.

• v. Mary Williams Montgomery, b. Nov. 21, 1874 in Maras (now called Kahramanmaras), Turkey, d. Aug. 16, 1955 in Corpus Christi, TX; m. May 20, 1909 near Stamford, Conn. as his 2nd wife, Gutzon Borglum (i.e., John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum), the renowned creator-sculptor of the four Presidents at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota. Two children of the family.
