On Tuesday, May 10, 2016, A. W. Brewer, 91, of Caldwell passed away at his home in Caldwell and went to his heavenly home after a battle with respiratory ailments and cancer.

Brewer was born July 8, 1924 in Levita, Texas to James Wesley and Ada V. (Voss) Brewer and spent most of his childhood in Gatesville and the surrounding communities. He attended school through 8th grade and began helping his father on the farm to support the family. During WWII at age 19, he entered the US Army and served as a veterinary technician Tec-5 in the China Offensive of the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, he returned home and began working for Powell Chevrolet as a mechanic. On May 24, 1947, he married Janice Faye Geiselbrecht at the Coryell Courthouse in Gatesville.

Mr. J. R. Harvey, owner of Harvey Motor Company in Caldwell heard of this great mechanic working at Powell Chevrolet and went to Gatesville to recruit Brewer to come to work for him in Caldwell. After several visits from Mr. Harvey and a visit to Caldwell, Brewer accepted an offer he couldn't refuse and moved to Caldwell in 1950. On June 28, 1952 the Brewers welcomed the birth of their daughter, Debbie. After Janice's un-timely death in 1960, Brewer became both father and mother caring for his 7 year-old daughter with the help of many friends in the community.

While employed with Harvey Motor Company he held the positions of mechanic, parts manager and salesman. He later became owner of the dealership and remained there until his retirement.

Brewer may have been the original "pay it forward" person and always led by example. His many involvements in service to the community include but are not limited to his 60 years of membership in Caldwell Men's Lions Club (elected to all offices); Caldwell VFD for 40 years, serving as Assistant Chief and Fire Chief; First United Methodist Church, serving on the Administrative Board and numerous committees; co-founder of Copperas Hollow Country Club and serving on the Board of Directors; served as a member of the Board of Directors of First State Bank (now BB&T) and served as an ambulance attendant transporting patients across the state and assisting Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home when needed. He often volunteered to cook for organizations, churches and family gatherings. His shop building was often used for community fund-raisers and drive-thru dinners.

After his retirement, he became "Mr. Fix-it" to all his friends and neighbors and if it was broken he could fix it. He was an avid golfer and played often until his health started to fail. He also enjoyed fishing and shared fish fries with friends. Brewer's shop became a gathering place many men in the community and became known as the CIA (Caldwell Information Agency).

From humble beginnings to successful businessman, he maintained his faith and loyalty to his family, friends and community. He quickly earned the respect of anyone that he came in contact with.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Brewer; his parents and a sister, Geneva Taylor.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Terry LaRoche of Pflugerville; a brother, Darvil Brewer and companion, Betty Malicoat of Gainesville; five sisters, Betty Neely of Littlefield, Ouida Paddock and husband, Sam of Dennison, Viola Able of Boone, IA, and Imogene Goodwin and Carolyn Fegette, both of Oglesby; two grandsons, Jeff LaRoche and wife, Lauren of Mooresville, NC and Brad LaRoche and wife, Tracy of Pflugerville; five great grandchildren, Grace LaRoche, Emeryson LaRoche, Lila LaRoche, Laynie LaRoche and Wesley LaRoche and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.

Services will be held at First Assembly of God Church in Caldwell with Rev. Wayne Calder officiating. Burial will follow at Caldwell Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Buddy Carlson, Johnny Price, Mike Patranella, Barry Rose, Frank Bush and Brian Barton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Caldwell Men's Lions Club and Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the Doctors of Scott & White Clinic and to Traditions Home health and Hospice for the care and compassion they demonstrated during Brewer's illness.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
