Louisa A Stevens was born in Alexandria, Virginia to Captain Russell and Katherine L Stevens. Her father was lost at sea when Louisa was about 17 years old. Along with her mother, she spent the latter half of her life at Rosedale in Philadelphia. Rosedale was the home of her sister, Helen, and brother-in-law, Horticulturist, Robert Buist, filled with gardens and nurseries of trees, plants, and flowers, where millions of seeds were produced. Along with several family members, there was always a host of servants, laborers, and gardeners. She continued living there after the deaths of Robert in 1880 and Helen in 1881. Louisa died single at the age of 94.

Louisa also had a brother, Charles Henry Stevens of Lewis County, Missouri (1815-1896). Louisa was ten years younger than Helen (1814-1881), so there are probably more siblings to find.
