STEVENS: At his home in this city, Monday evening, September 14, 1896, Charles H Stevens.
He was born in Virginia eighty-two year ago this coming December, and in early infancy, moved to Pennsylvania; and in 1836,sixty years ago, he move to Missouri. A few ays ago he fell from a lader on which he was gathering plums, and receive injuries that place him on his death-bed through it was not thought to be so severe as that and he apparently improved. He grew more cheerful as time went by, and his death prove a shock, not only to the community, but to the entire county.
A more honest and upright man than he was, never live. His whole life of 80 years was spent in utmost devotion to a close observance of, and adherence to the principles of pure manhood a laid down in the commandments. He observed them, not only because he felt it his duty to do so, but because it was his natural inclination as well.....No man has not been a public man, ha ever held a higher position in the estimation of the county than he held.
He has been a member of the Baptist church for more sixty years, and his life, in that time, has been such that he was always ready to meet his God at any moment the call might come....His wife, sons, and daughters are sorely afflicted over his departure and they mourn very bitterly the loss of one whom they loved and cherished.
The funeral was held Wednesday, and was under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge of this place, of which he was a faithful member, and one whom the order held in high esteem, an was always proud of the fact that they could point to him as one of their band, and full well did they know that he would ever be worthy of their esteem.
