Belle Fillmore Stewart passed away on February 12, 2000, in the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, surrounded by many of her family members.

Belle was a lover of sports, both as participant and passionate observer. She received her bachelor's degree in physical education from Brigham Young University in 1935. Following her graduation, she taught PE at Farrer Junior High School for two years. She also taught tap dancing lessons on and off throughout her life. Belle enjoyed outdoor recreation as well, and spent her college summer vacations working at V.T. Park in the Grand Canyon. With her friends, Angeline Warnick and Virginia Isabelle, she hiked from the north to the south rim of the Grand Canyon in 24 hours, on a whim. Two months later she hiked to the top of Mount Timpanogos. In 1963, she was chosen as the Outstanding Recreation Leader of the State of Colorado. Her final decades were spent in faithful attendance at various BYU sporting events.Aside from her role as beloved matriarch, Belle held many leadership positions. At BYU, she served as secretary of the junior class and in the following year assumed the duties of Student Body President from January through June of 1935. Belle valued her responsibilities in stake and ward Relief Society and Young Women presidencies as well.

An avid reader, Belle enjoyed membership in a variety of book clubs, including Provo's Literary League, of which she was a member for 22 years. She loved to give book reviews. A few days before her death, she spoke in Relief Society about some of her favorite literary works and offered her home as site for a new book club.

The majority of Belle's acquaintances will remember her for her elegance and social grace. Her savoir faire created an opportunity to work as bridal consultant at Montaldo's, which many considered to be the poshest store in Denver. She was a commentator for fashion shows and frequently lectured on charm to groups of women all over Northern Colorado. She loved to entertain at home, as well.

Belle was born on September 11, 1912, in Richfield, Utah, to Angus James Fillmore and Lizzie Belle Gardner Fillmore, in the Gardner family home. In 1938, she was married in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple to Byron John Stewart, who preceded her in death. Her brothers, Parker Fillmore and Hughes Hanchett, and sisters, Maurine Bryner and Elithe Cannon, are also deceased.

Memorial services will take place on Tuesday, February 15, at 11 a.m. in the Edgemont 11th Ward chapel at 3050 Mojave Lane in Provo. Viewings will be held on Monday, February 14, from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary ,185 East Center Street, Provo, and prior to the service on Tuesday, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
