Son of KNUD BECKMAN HANSEN and ANNE MARIE BOYE - BOIE. He was a farmer on the small scale and also had a kiln for brick-making in Denmark.

Oct 1, 1858--Hans married SIDSEL MARIE PEDERSEN, the daughter of HANS PEDERSEN. Sidsel was born on the Island of Aero, Denmark in 1836.

In 1876, Hans, age 44, immigrated with Sidsel his wife, and their 5 children in 1876 to the Copenhagen Community of Jackson Township, Shelby County, Iowa. Hans had bought the "railroad land" in this community. He was short-changed going through Castle Garden, New York during the immigration check of money and possessions. He was called a "tough man" and walked to the bank in Atlantic, the only one he apparently trusted. Another remembrance was that he put his walking plow over his shoulder and carried it 1 mile to get it fixed, rather than loading it in a wagon and hauling it. Hans and Sidsel were Charter Members of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

The 9 children of Old Hans Hansen and Sidsel were: 1. Ellen Marie Hansen (1859-1947), married Hans H. Hoogensen; 2. Knud (#1) Hansen, born and died in Denmark; 3. Anna Hansen (1861-1920), married Hans Pedersen; 4. Hans P. Hansen (1865-1936), married Anna K. Larsen; 5. Knud (#2) Hansen (1868-1911), married Ellen C. Nissen; 6. Ingeborg (Twin, 1870-1939), married Christian Jensen; 7. Twin of Ingeborg, (1870-died in Denmark); 8. Jorgenia, (born and died in Denmark); 9. George Hansen (born in Iowa 1876-1939), married Annie Marie Christensen; and 10. Jorgenia (#2) "Jennie" Hansen (born in Iowa 1878-1956), married Fred H. Christensen.

Sidsel died 17 February 1887. Old Hans then lived with his son George and his wife Anna until he died. Old Hans Hansen died 11 Nov 1907. Both are buried in the Jacksonville Cemetery.
