Knud Hansen, senior member of the local merchandise firm of Hansen & Lage, whose serious illness was mentioned in the Republican of last week, died at his home in Harlan shortly after noon Tuesday (29 Nov 1911). He had been ill about ten days of pleurisy, pneumonia, or kindred lung trouble, during all which time his condition was extremely precarious, and his family and friends alternated between hope and despondency, as is condition fluctuated from fair to worse. A trained nurse was employed to care for him, and local physicians, assisted by a specialist from Omaha, did all their training and skill could suggest to save his life, all without avail. The announcement of his death was received by all with profound regret.
Arrangements have been made to hold the funeral at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Thanksgiving Day, at the Congregational church. The pastor will preach the sermon. Mt. Zion Commandery, K.T., will close the exercises at the church; and Sardius Lodge of Masons will have charge of the exercises at the mausoleum.
Knud Hansen was born in Denmark, September 5, 1868. In 1876 his parents moved to America, bringing a considerable family with them, the subject of this sketch among the children. They settled upon a farm in Jackson township, this county, the parents living there until their death, the other some twenty years ago, the father about four years ago.
Knud remained upon the farm until he had attained his majority, and was married there, in 1891 to Miss Christina Nissen. A short time thereafter the family moved to Harlan, the husband entering the mercantile business, first as a clerk, and in 1895 as a member of the firm of Schouboe & Hansen, who established the "Regulator" general merchandise store. He has been connected with that house ever since, through a number of reorganizations, the firm at his death being composed of himself and Carl Lage. In addition to the store here, the firm owned a large general merchandise store at Anita.
Mr. Hansen was the father of two living children, Marie and Helen, which daughters remain to comfort the widowed mother. A third child, a twin with Miss Helen, died in infancy.
Beside his own immediate family, he leaves a number of brothers and sisters, all of whom live in this county. These are: Mrs. Marie Hoogensen, Mrs. Anna Peterson, H.P. Hansen, Mrs. Ingewold Jepsen, George Hansen, and Mrs. Jennie Christensen.
