Funeral Services were held Saturday at 3:30 p. m. at the Fredonia ward chapel for William Brooksby of Fredonia, Bishop W. D. Judd officiating.
Mr. Brooksby was born in Salt Lakes, Victoria, Australia, July 6, 1878, and emigrated to this country with his father and mother and 8 brothers and sisters. After a two weeks stop in Salt Lake City he and his father came on to Fredonia to prepare a home, and left the mother and children in Richfield where the youngest daughter was born. After helping his father to establish a home he left with a traveling photographer and learned the trade. Later he went to the Nevada gold fields and worked in the mines six years. He went to Los Angeles and got his first naturalization papers at the age of 22. He returned to Fredonia and married Emma Jensen, and took her with him to Nevada. While there he owned a turqoise mine. Four years later he came home and spent two years in the sheep business with his father and brothers and then took over the mercantile establishing of his wifes father and remained in this business until his death, 26 years.
He spent years trying to get his naturalization papers and finally became despondent in regard to this important step in his life, because he had spent most of his life in the attempt. Just three weeks before his death he made a trip to Flagstaff with his son and brother, and received his final papers making him a citizen of the United States.
Mr. Brooksby's hobby was to keep his word. He was honest and industrious and was interested in building up the commonwealth. He was baptised into the L. D. S. church in 1917 along with his son, Oscar, and has been active in church work ever since.
He is survived by his mother, age of 83, and his wife and the following children, Oscar, Clarence, Isabelle, Edith, Gladys, Victor, Vivien, Franklin, Marie and Kathleen. His daughter Edith is filling a mission in the East Central States and was unable to attend the funeral.
His oldest sister resides in Australia, having remained there when her father movd to America. Four brothers, Joseph, Alfred, John and Wilford, also two sisters, Eliza and Olive are in Fredonia. Two sisters, Emily and Amiee are in Los Angeles. Albin was killed in Zion canyon two years ago.
Mr. Brooksby had been enjoying excellent health up to the time of his death, but on this particular day had worked very hard, and while burning brush in the field became over heated, and returned to the house completely exhausted. He went to his room to rest, and insisted that his wife go close the store. In her absence his son Franklin, found his father dead.
All of his children returned home but Edith, who is in North Carolina. His two sisters Emily Watson and Amiee Hutchins came from Los Angeles. Mrs. Brooksby's brother and sisters came, David Jensen and his wife from Tooele, Utah, Mrs. Annie J. Haycock, Mrs. Bertha J. Christiansen, Jimmy Haycock, Mr. Ben Peterson, and wife, Florence J. Peterson came from Salt Lake City.
