Joseph Brooksby was born in Salt Lakes, Victoria, Australia, April 5, 1884, the fifth child and second son of the 9 children of William James and Emma Hobbs Brooksby. In 1897 he emigrated to the United States with his parents who settled at Fredonia and on December 10, 1910 he married Hermoine Pratt. To this union were born 8 children-- four boys and four girls.
Mr. and Mrs. Brooksby celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in December 1960, but on December 19, 1964, sister Brooksby passed away. Mr. Brooksby is survived by two sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Amy Hutchins of LaPuente, California and Alfred, Wilford, and Mrs. Warren D. (Olive) Judd of Fredonia. He is also survived by seven children (his second son Eldon, preceded him in death on November 25, 1959), 39 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Mr. Brooksby was Justice of the Peace at Fredonia for twenty years (1938-1958) and while in this office performed marriages for over 1,000 couples. He had little formal education as we know it today, but earned vast degrees of knowledge from the college of life and his work in his church and his community. He was in the sheep business with his father and his brothers for fifty years, later changing to cattle, but "Uncle Joe" was better known as a carpenter and builder and for many years was inspector of church buildings in the Kanab Stake.
