Dr. Alfred Brooksby was born July 13, 1888 at Salt Lakes, Douglas Post Office, Victoria, Australia. He was the 7th child of the 11 children of William James Brooksby and Emma Hobbs Brooksby. In the fall of 1897 Alfred emigrated to the United States and on to Fredonia with the family as his father had been converted to the LDS Church by a missionary from Fredonia - Davis Stewart.
The Brooksby family were farmers and eventually became sheepmen and wool producers--- a business learned while living in Australia. They later converted to the cattle business.
Alfred took a vacation trip to Los Angeles in 1908 and there he met a dentist and became interested in dentistry work. While herding shee at home and on the range he studied books on dentistry and also took a correspondence course in taxidermy and learned to tan skins and mount heads.
He wasn't interested in cheap reading, but read educational literature. Standard works of the LDS Church and especially the Book of Mormon were among his favorites, and in August, 1910 he was baptized a member of the LDS Church. Nine months later he was called on a mission for this church to Australia---his former home.
On July 16, 1913 he was married in the St. George LDS Temple to Vida Judd, a childhood friend and classmate of Fredonia. Seven children were born to this union and Alfred is survived by his widow and the following six children: Marvin, Reva (Mrs. Cliff Swapp), Velda (Mrs. Herbert Kunz), Myrtle (Mrs. Oscar Judd), Eula Mae (Mrs. Keith Bryner), and Wayne.
In 1923 Alfred went to Philadelphia, Penn., to study dentistry. Because of his previous reading and studying along with practical experience he completed the dental course in three months. He then returned to Fredonia and set up a dental practice in his home and was about the only dentist south of Richfield, Utah for many years. He also traveled to Orderville and Alton to do dental work.
Dr. Brooksby served as Bishop of the Fredonia LDS Ward two different terms and was also on the Fredonia School Board a total of twenty-one years.
