Aunt Codie was born on November 22,1904 to William David and Della Hart Mathews. She was my Daddy's sister. Her other brothers included: Addis and Eddie Mathews. A sister: Virgie Mathews Hartzog. She and Aunt Virgie married first cousins. Aunt Codie married Curtis Hartzog. They had a son: Shelby Hartzog, and a daughter: Vivian Hartzog Peeler. They have 4 grandchildren and some great grandchildren. There could be more by now,but I've lost contact with the family. Aunt Codie was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
I really enjoyed going to see Aunt Codie and Uncle Curtis when I was growing up. Uncle Curtis was a farmer, and they raised chickens, hogs, and cows. They would have their hogs and cows processed. We went down every year to get a lot of pork meat. They owned a lot of land, and they raised a big crop. I especially enjoyed eating the watermelons that they had.
In her latter years, Aunt Codie had to be put in a nursing home because of altizemer's disease. She really loved her family. She is greatly missed.
