Robert Morris Babcock
(October 13, 1927 - January 1, 2017)
U.S. Veteran
Robert Morris (Bob) Babcock, age 89, of 43 Creek Road (Silvara) Laceyville, PA, joined his wife Rosemarie Voda Babcock, in his heavenly home Sunday, January 1, 2017.
He was born in Elk Lake, PA, on October 13, 1927. Bob was the eldest son of the late Edwin and Bernice Sivers Babcock. His siblings include two brothers, Donald and his Wife Marilyn of Johnson City, IN, and Norman of St. Joseph, PA; three sisters Ella Rosengrant and Vera Blaisure both of Meshoppen, PA; Catherine Molenko of Kingsley, PA and the late Eldon Babcock of Irish Hill.
Bob was a 1946 graduate of the Dimock Vocational High School. After graduation he proudly served his country in the United States Marines. He was very active in sports and still attended his great-grandson Mikey Wilcox’s football, wrestling, and baseball games as much as his health would allow. You could always find him sitting in his recliner watching whatever sport was being played on the TV. He and his son, Chip, loved cheering for the opposite teams.
He was a member of the St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen, PA; a 50 year member of the Rought Hall American Legion Post #510; a member of the DAV; a life member of the NRA; a life member of the Carpenters Union 277 of Binghamton, NY; and South Auburn Grange# 1188.
Bob retired from the Carpenters Union and then he started his own business, Babcock’s Construction. During the years he ran the construction business, he hired and mentored many people. His son, nephews, and others will always have many memories and stories to tell.
Bob loved gong to Falls, PA and hunt with his nephew, Tom Voda, and his hunting group. The place he loved the most was what we call Meat Hill, Hill Hilltop. Chip built him a little shanty where he would sit, nice and warm while watching his field. He did go hunting again this year. The last time he went, his step-granddaughter, Lisa Wilcox, took him. He was sitting in the truck while sleeping and told Lisa to be on watch. She saw two nice bucks but he did not see them due to his blindness.
Besides his siblings, Bob is survived by his son Theodore (Chip) and his wife Connie Chilson Babcock of Silvara, PA. Three step-grandchildren Joseph Johnston Jr. (Kimberly) of Little Meadows, PA; Lisa Johnston Wilcox (Michael) of Silvara, PA; and Cathy Allis Cook (Tyler) of Rome, PA. Six great-grandchildren, Tori Martle of El Paso, TX; Joseph Johnston III of Carthage, NY; Jack Johnston and Mackenzie Johnston of Little Meadows, PA; Johnicca Strozyk and Byron Pierson of Montrose, PA; and Mikey Wilcox of Silvara, PA. Mikey and his grandpa Bob shared the same birthday and always celebrated it together with a dinner and cake prepared by Lisa. Bob is also survived by his sister in law, Mary Babcock, of South Carolina; brother-in-law Theodore (Ted) Voda and his wife Kay of Micco, FL; Ruth Voda and Marion Voda of Silvara, PA. He was very close to all of his special nieces and nephews. His Goddaughter is Carol Voda Owen of Silvara, PA and she held a very special place in his heart. Jerry Mikus was his very special friend who spent a lot of time with him. He had two caregivers who went above and beyond their duties; they were Catherina Barna and Phyllis Hughes. Byron Pierson also spent nights with him.
Funeral services for Bob will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, with Father Joseph Manarchuck of St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. A military service will precede at the funeral home, being performed by the members of the Rought Hall American Legion Post #510, Black Walnut, PA, Dennis Strong American Legion Post #457, Tunkhannock, PA, and the Endless Mountain Post #3583 V.F.W, Mehoopany, PA.
