Joe Bryant Smith, 74, died at 12:05 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012, at Metcalfe County Nursing Facility in Edmonton, Kentucky.

Joe was born in Barren County, Kentucky, on September 15, 1937, to the late Mac W. and Della Cross Smith. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching sports, especially basketball.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Glenn Poynter officiating.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Lung Association.

Joe is survived by his son, David (Robin) Barnard of Florida; grandchildren, Alex, Chris and David Bell, all of Columbus, Heather Bell of Columbus, Michelle (Chuck) Bryant of Columbus, Missy (Paul) Luttrell, Starr Bouie and Heath and Dustin Barnard, all of Florida; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Herman (Carol) Smith of Mulberry; a sister, Maxine Hammond of Scipio; his companion, Alice Byrd; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha Velma Smith; his second wife, Runell Young Smith; a daughter, Barbara Bell; brothers, Charles, Kenneth and Stanley Smith; sisters, Ruby Cox, Regina Bartlett, Elnora Huffines and Gladys Halsema; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
